Identifying Symptoms of Canine Heartworm

Heartworms can be found all over the world, but they favor warm southern climates. Heartworms are a problem in most of the United States and because they can infect dogs, cats, coyotes, foxes, wolves and other animals they are very difficult to treat and contain.
The life cycle of the heartworm begins in a mosquito. The mosquito performs the role of both carrier and host for the larva of this parasite by picking up the larva from an infected animal and depositing into a healthy animal when it sucks blood.

Once the larva enters the new animal it burrows into the dog in search for blood vessels. The larva then enters these blood vessels and makes its way to the heart using the circulation of the blood through the animal’s system. Once it enters the heart, the larva attaches itself to the heart muscle and begins to grown. Heartworms can reach lengths of 12 inches and resemble cooked spaghetti. With time, as they increase in size and number, heartworms impede blood circulation to the heart and cause circulatory and respiratory complications.

As the heartworms mature they begin laying eggs, this process happens within six to eight months and a single female worm can lay thousands of eggs a day. The larva then enter the arteries and travel to the outer areas of the animal’s body ready to become picked up by a mosquito and transported to a new host.

Due to the fact that many wild animals are infected with heartworm it is very difficult to control the spread of this nasty parasite.
Luckily there are many treatments that can be given to dogs to protect them from infection. These protective treatments come in different forms; there are pills and topical applications which can protect your dog even if he is bitten by a mosquito carrying the infection.

Infected dogs can also be treated if the infection hasn’t caused long term damage.
Symptoms of heartworm infection include:

• Coughing, wheezing or retching
• Intolerance to exercise
• Abnormal lung sounds
• Lethargy
• Loss of consciousness

Symptoms may not be noticeable until the infestation is severe and this is why it is very important to put your dog on a protective program from the age of seven months. If you are traveling to an area where heartworms are prevalent you should start your dog on a heartworm prevention treatment at least two months before you travel. Your vet should be able to advise you on the best protection options available.

How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth

Just because you don’t see many dogs starring in Crest commercials, that doesn’t mean that they are immune to dental problems. Like humans, dog are susceptible to a variety of serious dental conditions. Unlike with humans, there are no doggy veneers, implants or dentures. That makes it very important to care for your dog’s teeth lest he develop life threatening conditions that can lead to early death.

Healthy food is also important for canine dental health. There are no toothbrushes, dental floss or dentists in nature. Instead, dogs rely on hard food to keep their teeth clean. In domestication we must provide them with these things. Make sure they at the very least always have a good selection of chew toys.

Considering a dog’s diet, bad breath shouldn’t come as a surprise. But there is a difference between bad breath caused by food and that caused by dental decay. The decay smell is much more putrid and you will instantly recognize it. This smell is a precursor to coming dental problems. If this is the case with your dog, it’s time to begin a serious dental hygiene program. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to have him examined by a vet to check for existing cavities.

Though very few pet owners brush their dog’s teeth regularly, it needs to be done from time to time. I recommend that you give their teeth a good cleaning at least weekly. In the beginning this will be easier said than done. Find specially designed canine toothpaste. It should not contain fluoride since it is toxic if swallowed. Dog toothpaste is made to be swallowed. Begin by gently rubbing the past on the animal’s teeth. In the beginning you may even want to forego the brush. Get him used to the sensation before adding something new. After a while the dog should have no problem with a gentle cleaning.

It’s normal for the dog’s teeth to bleed a little at the beginning. Just beware of loose teeth that signal a more serious problem. Be extremely gentle and let the dog give an occasional lick. This will keep him interested and make things less traumatic overall. Continue a gentle up and down cleaning as long as the dog will tolerate it. Eventually he will signal you when the cleaning has ended. At this point you can facilitate future cleanings by giving him a treat as a reward.

Dogs have much stronger teeth than humans but they are still susceptible to bacterial decay. Tooth loss can cause dogs to die in their old age. Make sure your dog has the longest life possible by giving them regular cleanings and dental exams.

What are Service Dogs?

Not all dogs live the leisurely life of a family pet on a fluffy, cushy dog bed. Some of them actually have jobs they are required to do every day. I’m not talking about the junkyard guard dog whose job it is to lounge around all day. I’m talking about the service dogs, or more commonly known as guide dogs. These are the super smart animals who help people with disabilities make their way through the modern world and life. The two most common being the “seeing eye” dogs and the “hearing ear” dogs, though there are several other types as well.

To qualify for one of these highly trained dogs, the person applying must meet disability standards set by the federal government. An evaluator will meet with the person to determine if they qualify and if so what their needs are. Once approved, the person is placed on a waiting list and will get a dog as one becomes available. Depending on the person’s level of disability and financial situation, they will either have to pay for the dog out of pocket or will qualify for a free service animal.

Once the dog becomes available, the next step is training. The dog has already been trained; now the person has to be trained how to work with the dog. This will usually take 6-8 weeks though many programs last several months, and once the trainer believes the person and animal are ready to go, they will be released.

Dogs selected to be service dogs begin their training as puppies. The training is intense and lasts for a year or more. The dogs are started with basic commands and then progress through more difficult tasks such as safely crossing the street. All through the training the dogs are constantly evaluated for demeanor and aptitude. If the dog is deemed unsuitable, it will be put up for adoption by a family.

The dogs are trained to do many things. A dog trained to help the blind is trained to follow sidewalks, cross the street, negotiate obstacles, retrieve items and dozens of other tasks that the non disabled take for granted. Dogs for the hearing impaired do things like recognizing a knock at the door, a ringing telephone and many sounds that indicate a dangerous situation such as smoke alarms. The dogs will get their owner’s attention and show them what the problem is.

Most of these dogs are trained by volunteers. Often, successful service dogs are bred to continue a good line of animals. Over time, a line of offspring with the exact traits required are born.

Service animals enjoy special protection under the law. They can enter any public establishment, with a few exceptions, that people can. Restaurants and public buildings are two of the most common places to spot working dogs. Though it’s usually obvious that they are on the job, they usually wear an identifying vest to make them and their owner stand out more.

Other types of service dogs help the physically disabled. They can assist them in and out of their wheelchairs and do tasks that would require too much movement. There is really no end to the things a well trained dog can do for a person.

Is It Time for the Puppies to Arrive?

So your precious little puppy is all grown up and is about ready to give birth to her first litter of offspring. Though it’s likely she will take care of things herself with no help from you, it is possible for problems to arise. You need to be able to recognize the signs of impending labor and be ready to help out.

The labor can happen as early as about 58 days after insemination, though normal gestation is between 60-64 days. At about 58 days you should start taking a rectal temperature reading. The normal temperature is 101 – 102 degrees Fahrenheit. A day or two before labor, the temperature will drop several degrees. Once you see this drop, labor should start with 12 -24 hours.

The pregnant dog will probably stop eating a day or so before labor. If you see them vomiting, this is almost always a sign that they are getting ready to give birth. She will also become more wary of strangers and even family members. Keep small children away from her at this point. Signs associated with nesting will also be present. Scratching the carpet and rearranging her sleeping area are sure signs that she is preparing her birth place. IF you plan on using a whelping box this is the time to get started.

Imminent birth is shown by physical changes such as a distended belly and panting. The dog will be agitated and will likely pace back and forth. Her nipples will swell and redden. She will likely lick her genital area. The first sign that the pups are coming is the appearance of the grey water sack. It may or may not rupture as it exits. After you see this, the first puppy could arrive within minutes. IF after an hour there are no puppies, there is a problem.

Expect the dog to whimper and cry during delivery. It could take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours for all the puppies to arrive. In some cases it could take even longer. Make sure you have a place prepared to place the puppies as they are born and clean towels with which to clean them, you will not want to use your normal dog bed.

If it has been more than 65 days and your dog still hasn’t given birth, she needs a vet. There are several problems that could be hindering delivery and they are all potentially life threatening. Medications can often induce delivery but sometimes surgery will be necessary.

Dogs usually need no help at all for a successful delivery, but sometimes problems arise. To prevent surprises, it’s a good idea to know more or less when things should begin. This way you can be ready to observe in the best case and help out should you need to do so.

The Benefits of Adopting From A Shelter

When visiting your community shelter, make certain you have adequate time to examine the various dogs’ personalities. Take it from the cage and interact with it and watch how it responds with other dogs and humans. There is no rule that states you need to adopt today, so take your time to visit many shelters and take time with the animals before selecting the one that you will designate part of your family. The decision to adopt a pet is a promise for the life of the pet and has to be seriously measured. Do not be dejected if you do not decide on the dog of your dreams on your initial visit to the shelter. Let the shelter know the type of dog you’re looking for and they can place you on a waiting list.

Approximately one quarter of the dogs shelters receive are purebreds and they also have a collection of puppies and adult dogs. Some of the factors pets are abandoned at the shelter include monetary difficulties by the preceding owner, a previous owner who didn’t have reasonable expectations of the time and effort necessary to sustain a permanent relationship with their pet and others. Nearly half the dogs in shelters are eventually put to sleep since there are just not enough homes eager to take on the responsibility of ownership.

The rules of adoption vary among shelters. Shelter personnel ask questions concerning lifestyle, prior pet ownership and what your residence arrangements are. They may even ask you for references or establish a waiting period before you can take the dog home with you.

Your pet, if not already spayed or neutered, must have that done before you can take it home with you. Furthermore, your new pet will require a complete exam and all necessary vaccinations before it can be released.

You can expect to pay in the range of $40 to $125 for the examination, spaying or neutering, shots and microchip insertion if requested. Shelter adoptions are much less expensive than buying a dog from a pet store or breeder. Any advertisement concerning free puppies must be considered with caution.

The pet adoption experience varies at different types of shelters, so take the time to search ASPCA and Humane Society of the U.S (HSUS) websites for listings of shelters and humane societies near you. Shelters are generally limited-stay facilities, sometimes government-funded and may have fostering programs. Humane societies are typically private, non-profit groups that use education, care, training and other associated services in their mission. Rescue groups can also be a trustworthy source for particular breeds of dogs or cats. These groups focus and often keep animals in foster homes.

Adoption counseling is frequently employed by shelters to ensure that animals do not end up abandoned again. Other areas of support may incorporate medical services, and behavior and obedience training.

If you plan on bringing a dog home from the shelter, prepare your house beforehand. Sort of like childproofing, you may need to dog-proof your house until your new pet gets settled in. Also, you’ll want to bring a collar, leash, and pet carrier with you in order to carefully bring your new dog home.

Adopting a dog from an animal shelter can be a satisfying

The Process of Attaching Aquarium Backgrounds

Seeing all the aquarium supplies in place, you will definitely appreciate the aquarium with a background in it. Most people attach an aquarium background to greatly enhance the appearance of the fish and every décor inside the tank. The background can help create an illusion, making the tank seem to be bigger than it was supposed to be. It also makes the tank look more natural without necessitating the need of adding a lot of artificial stuffs and decorations. Ultimately, the main reason for installing aquarium backgrounds is to hide all the unattractive cluster of wirings and tubes at the back of the tank.

Aquarium backgrounds come in so many designs and colors. There is the typical plain black or plain blue sheet. But to give the tank more depth, you can choose to have scenic underwater backgrounds. These underwater photos or designs are usually printed in plastic paper. They are precut and sold in rolls at aquarium supplies stores and pet shops. With the availability of an assortment of colors and themes, purchasing the right design can be a very difficult thing to do. Sometimes the choosing process entails more time than the installation itself.

To attach the aquarium background, you need to start with an empty tank. It is important that you clean the interior and exterior surfaces of the aquarium glass with aquarium filters and safe glass cleaners. Place the background up against the exterior surface of the aquarium, making sure that the design is well-oriented in place. Once you get it to the position you want, secure it with a tape and trim off the excess to get it to the correct size. Using a clear and water-resistant tape, secure the attachment at the top most portions first; then, tape the sides moving all the way to the bottom. You now have a beautiful aquarium background and can start working on installing the rest of your aquarium supplies and equipment.

Doggie Diets: How-To?

Just like Americans are getting fatter each year, our dogs are also facing an obesity epidemic. And like humans, being overweight can lead to a whole range of health related issues. Besides being hard on the animal’s joints, illnesses such as diabetes and breathing conditions are also much more likely. If your dog has a weight problem, it’s crucial that you get them on a diet right away.

First, you need to determine if your dog is fat. If you even suspect that the dog is overweight, then it is. A dog at a healthy weight actually appears quite slim. Their ribs should be easily felt, with no fat covering this area. The distinction between the rib cage area and the waist should be very clear. If your dog does not have these characteristics, then he needs to shed a few pounds.

Before planning a diet for your dog, you need to have an idea of how much weight he needs to lose. This can be difficult to estimate and a vet’s advice can come in handy.

Putting your dog on a diet may be as simple as cutting down on the amount of food he eats each day, removing all human food and leftovers from his diet, or even placing the dog on a specially designed diet dog food. There are two diets in particular that are getting a lot of attention.

The first is an all organic diet. You can buy organic dog food, but most owners prepare their own meals. There are numerous recipes available on the internet and preparing them is not as hard as it seems. A few minutes a week is often all it takes to prepare healthy meals for your pet.

The second popular diet is the raw food diet. This diet is based off of what a dog would eat in the wild. Though many people don’t realize it, dogs actually eat a lot of plant substance in the wild, so the raw diet will not be based solely on meat. However it will include a lot of raw bones. A dog can eat any bone as long as it is not cooked. Cooking causes bones to become brittle which can cause them to splinter and damage the dogs throat and stomach. Since this diet is high in protein and low in carbohydrates, it is a good way to help the dog shed a few pounds.

Just like for humans, a dog should be eased into a diet, especially if it consists of major changes to the type of food he is eating. Portions should be gradually reduced so the dog does not feel so hungry.

Don’t forget to incorporate a good exercise program into the diet plan. Lack of activity is a leading cause of obesity in dogs, just as it is in humans. Get your dog outside and play with him. Get in the habit of taking him for daily walks on a leash. Not only will this benefit your dog, but it will also increase the amount of exercise you are getting.

Furniture for Day Care Center

A day care center that is complete of facilities can provide good quality of education and care. Children can gain good quality education with the help of the adequate learning supplies. This is a good way to provide children the education they need. Furniture such as tables, chairs, cabinets and other daycare furniture are important for children’s learning.

Tables and chairs are used for children’s activities such as writing, drawing etc. These items should also be convenient for children. These should be the main concern regarding on the basic things in a day care center. The height of the table and chair must be on the level to the height of the children. It should not be too high or too low. Another is bookshelf. This is very useful for organizing books or can sometimes be used for your display of toys and other decorations. Cabinet is one kind of furniture essential for storing purposes. This may help you organize your day care center by storing all the toys and other objects left behind by kids.

Enough space for your daycare furniture must be in mind. It may help children to feel comfortable. Furniture can take much of the space but proper arrangements maximize space. You can choose what kind of furniture you want to use, either furniture made of wood, plastic or metal. Ensure the quality and the durability of the items before buying them to assure children’s safety when they are using it. For example, bookshelf and cabinet should not easily fall over when accidentally bumped by children because it is made of strong materials and installed with quality.

This quality items may let you spend big amount but the assurance of longevity and safety of the children should not be set aside. It is the main key to get a successful day care center.
