Heartworms can be found all over the world, but they favor warm southern climates. Heartworms are a problem in most of the United States and because they can infect dogs, cats, coyotes, foxes, wolves and other animals they are very difficult to treat and contain.
The life cycle of the heartworm begins in a mosquito. The mosquito performs the role of both carrier and host for the larva of this parasite by picking up the larva from an infected animal and depositing into a healthy animal when it sucks blood.

Once the larva enters the new animal it burrows into the dog in search for blood vessels. The larva then enters these blood vessels and makes its way to the heart using the circulation of the blood through the animal’s system. Once it enters the heart, the larva attaches itself to the heart muscle and begins to grown. Heartworms can reach lengths of 12 inches and resemble cooked spaghetti. With time, as they increase in size and number, heartworms impede blood circulation to the heart and cause circulatory and respiratory complications.

As the heartworms mature they begin laying eggs, this process happens within six to eight months and a single female worm can lay thousands of eggs a day. The larva then enter the arteries and travel to the outer areas of the animal’s body ready to become picked up by a mosquito and transported to a new host.

Due to the fact that many wild animals are infected with heartworm it is very difficult to control the spread of this nasty parasite.
Luckily there are many treatments that can be given to dogs to protect them from infection. These protective treatments come in different forms; there are pills and topical applications which can protect your dog even if he is bitten by a mosquito carrying the infection.

Infected dogs can also be treated if the infection hasn’t caused long term damage.
Symptoms of heartworm infection include:

• Coughing, wheezing or retching
• Intolerance to exercise
• Abnormal lung sounds
• Lethargy
• Loss of consciousness

Symptoms may not be noticeable until the infestation is severe and this is why it is very important to put your dog on a protective program from the age of seven months. If you are traveling to an area where heartworms are prevalent you should start your dog on a heartworm prevention treatment at least two months before you travel. Your vet should be able to advise you on the best protection options available.

Not all dogs live the leisurely life of a family pet on a fluffy, cushy dog bed. Some of them actually have jobs they are required to do every day. I’m not talking about the junkyard guard dog whose job it is to lounge around all day. I’m talking about the service dogs, or more commonly known as guide dogs. These are the super smart animals who help people with disabilities make their way through the modern world and life. The two most common being the “seeing eye” dogs and the “hearing ear” dogs, though there are several other types as well.

To qualify for one of these highly trained dogs, the person applying must meet disability standards set by the federal government. An evaluator will meet with the person to determine if they qualify and if so what their needs are. Once approved, the person is placed on a waiting list and will get a dog as one becomes available. Depending on the person’s level of disability and financial situation, they will either have to pay for the dog out of pocket or will qualify for a free service animal.

Once the dog becomes available, the next step is training. The dog has already been trained; now the person has to be trained how to work with the dog. This will usually take 6-8 weeks though many programs last several months, and once the trainer believes the person and animal are ready to go, they will be released.

Dogs selected to be service dogs begin their training as puppies. The training is intense and lasts for a year or more. The dogs are started with basic commands and then progress through more difficult tasks such as safely crossing the street. All through the training the dogs are constantly evaluated for demeanor and aptitude. If the dog is deemed unsuitable, it will be put up for adoption by a family.

The dogs are trained to do many things. A dog trained to help the blind is trained to follow sidewalks, cross the street, negotiate obstacles, retrieve items and dozens of other tasks that the non disabled take for granted. Dogs for the hearing impaired do things like recognizing a knock at the door, a ringing telephone and many sounds that indicate a dangerous situation such as smoke alarms. The dogs will get their owner’s attention and show them what the problem is.

Most of these dogs are trained by volunteers. Often, successful service dogs are bred to continue a good line of animals. Over time, a line of offspring with the exact traits required are born.

Service animals enjoy special protection under the law. They can enter any public establishment, with a few exceptions, that people can. Restaurants and public buildings are two of the most common places to spot working dogs. Though it’s usually obvious that they are on the job, they usually wear an identifying vest to make them and their owner stand out more.

So your precious little puppy is all grown up and is about ready to give birth to her first litter of offspring. Though it’s likely she will take care of things herself with no help from you, it is possible for problems to arise. You need to be able to recognize the signs of impending labor and be ready to help out.

The labor can happen as early as about 58 days after insemination, though normal gestation is between 60-64 days. At about 58 days you should start taking a rectal temperature reading. The normal temperature is 101 – 102 degrees Fahrenheit. A day or two before labor, the temperature will drop several degrees. Once you see this drop, labor should start with 12 -24 hours.

The pregnant dog will probably stop eating a day or so before labor. If you see them vomiting, this is almost always a sign that they are getting ready to give birth. She will also become more wary of strangers and even family members. Keep small children away from her at this point. Signs associated with nesting will also be present. Scratching the carpet and rearranging her sleeping area are sure signs that she is preparing her birth place. IF you plan on using a whelping box this is the time to get started.

Imminent birth is shown by physical changes such as a distended belly and panting. The dog will be agitated and will likely pace back and forth. Her nipples will swell and redden. She will likely lick her genital area. The first sign that the pups are coming is the appearance of the grey water sack. It may or may not rupture as it exits. After you see this, the first puppy could arrive within minutes. IF after an hour there are no puppies, there is a problem.

Expect the dog to whimper and cry during delivery. It could take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours for all the puppies to arrive. In some cases it could take even longer. Make sure you have a place prepared to place the puppies as they are born and clean towels with which to clean them, you will not want to use your normal dog bed.

If it has been more than 65 days and your dog still hasn’t given birth, she needs a vet. There are several problems that could be hindering delivery and they are all potentially life threatening. Medications can often induce delivery but sometimes surgery will be necessary.

Dogs usually need no help at all for a successful delivery, but sometimes problems arise. To prevent surprises, it’s a good idea to know more or less when things should begin. This way you can be ready to observe in the best case and help out should you need to do so.
